What’s in your makeup bag?

This month has been a big one for makeup changes!  As I’ve recently moved to Manila my favorite Dior Capture Totale Foundation was just too moisturizing. So that will be kept for cooler weather trips. After much testing of foundation (8 at last count), the new winner is Guerlain Lingerie De Peau foundation medium coverage which can be built up (to cover imperfections) or sheered out with moisturizer for a tinted moisturizer look. I love to mix mine with a shimmer product for evening radiance glamor.

I use Armani Fluid Sheer for that I’ve been testing new primers for an article this month, for day the best I’ve used is Dermalogica Skinperfect primer SPF30 or as I like to call it, facial Spakfilla, perfect for filling in pores and fine lines. My night pick is Guerlain Meteorites Light Diffusing Perfecting Primer for glow, glow and more glow.

My absolute number 1 pick of the month (year! decade!) is the Hourglass Ambient Lighting powder which I have in ‘Luminous’ and ‘dim’ (but I want them all! gimme! gimme!) The marketing spiel says: ‘…

[the powders] capture, diffuse, and soften the way light reflects on your skin… Ambient Lighting Powder utilizes photoluminescent technology to filter out harsh light and refine the appearance of the complexion… deliver a multidimensional luminescence to every skin tone, making it appear softer, younger, and lit-from-within’, and for the first time (possibly ever) I believe them.

Do you have a signature scent? What is it?

I’m not sure if it’s my ‘signature scent’ but my favorite (at the moment. fickle as I am!) and the one I’m always asked about when wearing is Dior Dioressence. It’s notoriously hard to find and I believe only Saks stocks it in the US. My ‘special occasion’ scent is Frederic Malle’s Musc Ravageur. All of Frederic Malle’s parfumes are very special but $$$. My everyday, running around scent is Khiels Original Musk. I’m a musk girl at heart and I still (80’s flashback!) adore Body Shop White Musk oil.

You’re not afraid to wear super bright and vibrant colored lipstick. What is your secret to all night smudge-free lip color?

I’ve always loved a bright lip – it just makes you feel more ‘done’. Its especially good if you have been at the office all day and need to go out straight from work – just pop on a red lip and you look pulled together! My number one greatest red lip color was Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Mat 202, but it’s been discontinued (why do they always do that?)

Some other great (long lasting) reds are Mac Russian Red and Ruby Woo. The matte texture ensures a long wear – apply, blot, light powder with translucent powder, apply again and it wont move! I also swear by Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar – this stuff doesn’t budge! There is a huge range of colors and you can mix them easily for custom colors. ‘Stalker’ is a perfect blue red and ‘Anime’ a neon bright fuchsia which suits all skin tones. Apply just a drop (they are highly pigmented) and it will literally last all night.

Another favorite long lasting lip product is Lime Crime Velvetines in Red Velvet and Pink Velvet. If you are a fan of a bright orange (great for olive complexions – I love it but can’t pull it off with my pale skin!) Mac Morange is perfect.

Ever considered dying your trademark blonde locks?

I went through a burgundy red stage at university (it wasn’t a good look) with my pale skin anything but blonde makes me look sickly. The best advice given to me by celebrity hairdresser David Mallett in Paris in January this year was look at a baby photo and that’s a good color for your hair!

Do you ever go to bed with make-up on?

The last time I went to bed with make up on I was at university! A good tip is to leave a bottle of Bioderma Crealine no rinse cleanser or make up remover wipes (they dry out your skin but they’re better than nothing) beside your bed – no excuses then!

What is one thing you have learned in the last year that has changed your makeup routine?

Professional contouring. I learned from a makeup artist on a shoot and it totally transformed the way I do my own makeup. Having a round face, wider nose and aging jawline, I can now create cheekbones, slim nose and firm jawline – it’s like makeup Photoshop! My favorite contouring products are Nars Laguna Bronzer powder or the Nars cream matte multiple for dryer skin types or Kevyn Aucoin ‘The Sculpting’ Powder.

What’s your best advice for a professional looking make up application?

A good set of make up brushes makes all the difference (and will make your foundation look air brushed) I use Glamcor brushes and Real Techniques brushes. To look great in pics/on screen false lashes make a big difference. I like Ardell lashes. If you have a special event coming up (wedding, graduation, photo shoot) go into MAC or your local department store and have some applied – it literally takes 10 minutes and you will be happy when you are looking at those photos for the rest of your life!

Finally a makeup setting spray is a must to keep it all in place, all night – Make Up For Ever Mist & Fix works.

What are your favorite pharmacy brand/ budget make-up buys?

This is a whole article in itself! I love a pharmacy in the US and always make sure I have an empty suitcase to stock up on bargain buys. One of the best foundations on the market today is L’Oreal True Match foundation.  Pretty much all of the L’Oreal makeup and skincare range is great (and is pretty much identical to Lancome).
